It's that time again.... Ugh! Packing! Your flights in 7 hours and you realize that all you have packed is your laptop and a couple of business cards but literally have no idea what to wear.
Before starting my first real job - my closet consisted of College sweats, a few jeans ( way too many colors), emabarassing club clothes and flip flops. Let's face it. That's not going to exactly cut it at a Salesforce conference.Time to ditch the College days and wake up and smell the coffee (with a double shot of espresso!) because if you're in sales, you're going to need it.
Struggling to start on how to get business-y? Here are a few suggestions for what women should wear on a business trip in San Francisco:
blazers, blazers, blazers! Did someone say blazers? The easiest item to dress an outfit up or down! I bought my first blazer in 2015 and still rock it till' this day. It's the perfect combination of Lauren Conrad meets Olivia Pope. You ladies know exactly what I mean. This is a great investment for any women who is a young professional and can be bought at most retail stores. My favorite being Banana Republic!
conferences are no walk in the park.... in fact if your visitng San Francisco for a conference you're more than likely going to be heading to the Moscone center and FitBitting your way through the 700,000 square ft. exhibit. Before jumping to go to Tory Burch to buy the cutest flats on the block (yes they are adorable but ain't made for walkin!) try checking out these adorable and chic Hush Puppies.
the easiest and lightest way to stay warm in San Francisco during any time of year. The weather is so unpredictible that you'll be catching rays on one side of the street and on the other you've entered a wind tunnel with hail (not really.... but you never know). Have you heard of Karl the Fog yet? Yes, the fog actually has a name in The City. Scarves are so universal you can even use it to protect your hair from the humidity!! If you don't have one, borrow a friends or get one of your own! I personally think Express has affordable a professional scarves - check them out!
4. Rain Jacket or Umbrella
my biggest mistake going on my first business trip to San Franciscowas not having these two items handy. To my point above, the weather is SO unpredictable and this year is considered to be the "rain year" in San Francisco so just come prepared! The last thing you want is to show up at a meeting like a sad wet dog.... it's happened before. Just take my word - you'll thank me later!
so funny story. I once went to a conference (Oracle Open World to be exact) and one of my target accounts had a booth. I went up, introduced myself and my necklace immediately caught their eye. They referred to me as the "girl with the bling" - It was nothing fancy just a chunky diamond necklace from JCrew. Anyways, I followed up with an email in the subject line "Follow Up from The Girl With The Bling" and landed a call.... and a sales opportunity. Moral of the story, try to do something different that'll catch your prospect's eyes or you can reference in your follow up. No need to go all out and dress up in your Grandma's costume jewelery but a nice necklace may boost your confidence or catch some eyes or better yet, business cards!
